When it comes to home safety, smoke detectors play a critical role — and the new UL standards are rewriting the requirements.

At Harrison Electric, Inc., we’ve served our community for years with everything from circuit breaker safety to hardwired smoke detector installations. These updated regulations mean improved detection and reliability, and as your trusted hometown electricians, we’re here to make sure your home meets today’s higher safety expectations.

Here’s what you need to know.

The Magic Behind Fewer Kitchen False Alarms

We’ve all been there — dinner on the stove, steam in the air, and a smoke detector that won’t stop.

The new UL 217 8th edition standard introduces advanced sensors designed to reduce false alarms. When paired with updated wiring and installation, these detectors recognize the difference between cooking smoke and a true emergency, keeping families safer while reducing those all-too-familiar nuisance alerts.

Faster Response to Modern Materials

Today's homes are filled with synthetic materials – think about that affordable IKEA furniture, synthetic carpets, and plastic components throughout your house.

When these materials burn, they create different smoke patterns than traditional wood fires. The new UL standard ensures smoke detectors respond faster to these synthetic material fires, giving you and your family extra seconds to escape safely.

Manufacturing Deadline Creates Supply Challenges

Here's what many homeowners don't know: manufacturers had to stop producing the older UL 217 7th edition alarms last year.

While most manufacturers have switched production lines, suppliers struggle to keep the new alarms in stock. This supply crunch means limited availability at most locations, and as always, with the latest technology and safety improvements, prices have increased. But don't worry – Harrison Electric, Inc. planned and stocked up on the new alarms before the shortage hit.

Harrison Electric's Proactive Solution

We’re ahead of the curve on the new UL 217 8th edition standard, already using the Kidde DETECT line while awaiting their voice alarm model.

For service upgrades, our go-to is a 120-volt hardwired smoke detector with interconnected alarms and 10-year sealed batteries. These systems eliminate nuisance chirping, remove the hassle of battery changes, and provide simultaneous alerts throughout the home.

Older 7th edition devices are used only when partial upgrades require compatibility.

Built-in Replacement Reminders

Here's an innovative feature of all new alarms: they include end-of-life indicators that activate after about 10 years of service.

This eliminates guesswork about when to replace your detectors. Industry experts, fire marshals, and manufacturers recommend replacing smoke, fire, CO, and heat detectors every 10 years maximum.
