On June 5, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in collaboration with Midea America Corp., issued a recall of about 1.7 million U and U+ (U‑shaped) window air conditioners sold in the U.S., as well as roughly 45,900 additional units in Canada.
What’s Wrong?
A design flaw in the units prevents adequate drainage of condensed water, causing it to pool and enabling mold growth. Mold exposure carries risks such as respiratory issues, infections, and allergic reactions.
Reported Problems:
-
At least 152 reports of mold in these units.
-
17 incidents involved symptoms like respiratory infections, coughing, sneezing, sore throats, and allergic reactions.
Affected Models & Brands:
The recalled models span 8,000 to 12,000 BTU units under brands including Midea, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Comfort Aire, Keystone, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, Sea Breeze, and LBG Products. They’ve been sold at major retailers like Costco, Home Depot, Best Buy, Menards, Amazon, and others since March 2020.
What Consumers Should Do:
Consumers can choose between:
-
Free repair: A technician can install a new drain plug, or a DIY kit will be provided depending on model.
-
Refund: A full or prorated refund is available, contingent on purchase or manufacture date. Refunds require returning the unit via a free shipping label or submitting a photo showing the power cord has been cut.
